The whole concept of Take Flight Farms revolves around the centuries-old relationship between Human and Horse. Even when the automobile usurped their basic functions, horses continued to be a part of many people’s lives. In explaining what we do at Take Flight Farms, we are often asked, “Why horses? Why not dogs, or basketball or music?"

To put it simply, horses are incredibly smart and honest creatures. Like humans, they are very social and have unique personalities. The horse has an innate ability to mirror a client's behavior. If that behavior happens to be ineffectual, the horse is able to safely and quickly confront it and demand modification. This leads clients to find strengths deep within themselves that they may otherwise have not. Breakthroughs tend to occur much more quickly this way than in typical therapy settings.

Take Flight's Featured Equines:

SHOOTER
Shooter is the leader of the herd at Cooper Farm, and we've learned that things work best when he is the first one brought in from the pasture. He's a handsome chestnut gelding with a lot of "chrome" - white stockings on his hind legs and a broad white blaze on his face. Shooter used to be a bit head shy, meaning he didn't like us to touch his head, but with kind consistent work he has gotten much better.

DOLLAR
Dollar gets his name from his $ brand. He is a large boned chestnut quarter horse gelding, still strong at 20 years of age. His patience and quiet demeanor make him our first choice for timid clients, however, they need to be assertive to get him to move. He's very stubborn about getting his feet picked out, so only the most persistent can get him to cooperate. Dollar is a great therapy horse!

SLY
Sly is a fine-boned chestnut gelding with some Arabian in his pedigree. He is sweet and quiet, and enjoys lots of attention. Although an old injury prevents him from being ridden, he is very eager to participate in our unmounted challenges and can be quite the instigator. He enjoys a good grooming, especially combing out his long mane.

SHERMAN
Sherman is an experienced roping horse, so he requires a light sensitive touch. He's very cooperative when it comes to picking out his feet, but he does not liked to be tied so grooming him takes definite teamwork. Sherman is very happy to just hang out with his good buddy Sly and watch the other horses go to work.

STAR
Star is the only bay in the herd at Cooper Farm. Whatever he lacks in height, he makes up for in girth. We suspect that he's part pony, but no one knows for sure. Star can usually be found standing apart from the herd, and he used to be very difficult to catch. However, he found out that with Take Flight Farms he gets to play some fun games in addition to gentle grooming and lots of hugs. Of course, he also gets thanked with lots of carrots too!
